Rebecca Taylor Speaks at GreenAge II in Istanbul
27/04/2012

Partner Rebecca Taylor delivered a keynote address at the Second International GreenAge Symposium in Istanbul, Turkey.

The two-day conference, 26-27 April, organised by the Faculty of Architecture of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, has brought together experts from the private sector, universities, municipalities, and NGOs, working in the fields of architecture, engineering and design, to discuss and engage in key issues around a sustainable society and the green economy.

Speaking on the conference's second day,  Rebecca explored John Thompson & Partners' work on eco-cities and bioclimatic design.  JTP have been pioneering bioclimatic design for the last five years, embedding these principles in its projects across a range of climate zones. In her address, Rebecca discussed JTP's robust design methodology, which includes integrated tailor made strategies and solutions that take account of the climatic, cultural and site specific context of a project. Bioclimatic solutions are complex and every project and every site will generate its own set of design principles.

Bioclimatic or climate responsive design combines the study of climate, biology and ecology with urban scale masterplanning and building design in order to enhance the environment, improve living conditions and reduce energy consumption. Bioclimatic design provides the tools to develop specific, robust and future proofed low carbon design solutions for neighbourhoods, towns and cities. JTP has applied this technique across a variety of contexts, from the colder climates of Scandinavia, to the hotter and drier climates of the Middle East.

Most recently, JTP has applied a climate responsive design to the Suzhou Eco-Town masterplan. Watch this video to learn more about this project and its bioclimatic strategies.
