A hop in the right direction! Breathing new life into the Maltings at Lichtenrade

John Thompson & Partners' participatory planning work in Germany has made a major contribution to the award of the prize for community engagement received by the Ecumenical Environment Group, an association of local interest groups including members of Protestant and Catholic churches in Lichtenrade, in the south of Berlin.

Having been contacted by the Ecumenical Environment Group, Andreas von Zadow, JTP's partner in Germany, initiated a project to resolve a planning deadlock for the areabrownfield land around the Mälzerei, a huge, listed Maltings building which has stood unused for 80 years.

In August 2011, the JTP team of Andreas von Zadow, Fred London, Chia-Yun Wu and Ben Allen led a 2-day workshop in which the landowner, the Ecumenical Environment Group and representatives of REWE supermarket, which has a store on the site, worked together to find a strategy for bringing the whole area back to life. 

The  team's design proposals are currently being disussedconsidered by the local politicians.
