Incredible Edible is changing the way people think about their cities, towns and villages. JTP Partner Charles Campion visited Todmorden last weekend to find out more.
Incredible Edible (IE) is a simple idea carried through with passion, commitment and genius. It's impact is far reaching and it has the power to draw in people of influence, such as HRH Prince of Wales, Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall and this weekend RSA Chief Exec Matthew Taylor and Tim Lang, Professor of Food Policy at City University London.
IE Todmorden http://www.incredible-edible-todmorden.co.uk/ was founded 3 years ago by a group of local residents who wanted to respond to the incessant predictions of global environmental catastrophe with some home grown action - getting local people growing food! It's for everyone - "If you eat, you're in!". Co-founder Mary Clear says, " We aim to provide access to good local food for all, through working together, learning from field to classroom to kitchen and supporting local business. We speak the common language of food to make change happen." Since its formation, this voluntary group has transformed the face and profile of their town with a range of catchy initiatives with the common thread of food.
My incredible weekend began on Saturday afternoon at the Bear Cafe, the IE Tod meeting place that was once the Co-Op in the heart of the town. In walked IE co- founder Pam Warhurst (who is also Chair of Forestry Commission) followed by Matthew Taylor, who had come to chair the Incredible Todmorden Talks at the Hippodrome Theatre that evening.
