South Worcester Exhibition: 27 February 2013

The local community was invited to an exhibition of proposals for the development of the South Worcester urban extension area to the south of the A4440. The exhibition followed previous community events, including the South Worcester Community Planning Weekend - more information can be found below.

Welbeck Strategic Land LLP and their consultant team were on hand to discuss plans for a new community with up to 2,450 homes, employment space, sports pitches, open space and a local centre including community facilities, a primary school, GPs surgery, shops, cafés, offices and specialist accommodation for older people. The exhibition included more detailed information about the proposals and visualisations of what the new place could look like.

It is proposed to submit an outline planning application in spring 2013 with all matters of detail, except access, reserved for future consideration. A detailed application, centred around Middle Broomhall Farm, will be submitted for the GPs surgery and community facilities.

South Worcester Forum: 14 December 2011

The local community was invited to the second South Worcester Forum on Wednesday 14 December at St Peter’s Baptist Church.  The event began with a brief introduction and short presentation that was followed by a hands-on planning session where participants worked in small, facilitated groups looking at specific issues in detail.  This was a chance for local people to discuss items contained within the latest Newsletter (located in the PDF on the right hand side) as well as considering a number of specific issues of concern that were raised at the first Forum meeting in October.

South Worcester Forum: 6th October 2011

The first South Worcester Forum was held in St Peter’s Church on Thursday 6 October from 7pm – 9pm. The event included an update on Welbeck Strategic Land’s draft proposals for land to the south of the A4440 and provided an opportunity for further exploration of residents’ key concerns and aspirations.  A copy of the advertising Flyer which was sent out to those in the surrounding area can be downloaded in PDF format from beneath the image on the right-hand side of this page.

As with July’s Community Planning Weekend, this event was facilitated by John Thompson & Partners and was not part of the local authorities’ consultation on the South Worcestershire Development Plan (SWDP) which commenced on the 26th September and runs until the 18th November.

South Worcester Community Planning Weekend: 8th and 9th July 2011

Over 160 local people attended the South Worcester Community Planning Weekend at St. Peter's Baptist Church.  Visitors were encouraged to join workshops to provide their views on how an urban extension may be developed on land to the south of the A4440.  This land has been identified in the draft South Worcestershire Development Plan (SWDP) as a location for a new urban extension providing 20 hectares of employment and around 2450 homes.

During the event the community had the chance to participate in workshops and explore local and site specific issues.  Concerns were raised about the potential impact of development, particularly in relation to traffic congestion and the risk of flooding, but there was also discussion about the opportunities it might bring for improved local facilities and employment in the area.

Report Back

Following the Community Planning Weekend the design team analysed and summarised the outcomes of the event and prepared an illustrated Vision for South Worcester which was presented to the community on Wednesday 13 July 2011 at St. Peter's Baptist Church.  At the end of the event a Broadsheet was distributed, providing a summary of the key ideas and showing the Vision masterplan and aerial view.

Copies of the Report Back presentation and Broadsheet can be downloaded in PDF format from beneath the image on the right-hand side of this page.  These documents have been edited since the Report Back event to improve clarity for those who did not attend the event.

Future Events

The community will have further opportunities to provide inputs to the proposals for South Worcester as the masterplan is developed.  If you would like to be kept informed about all future events please send your contact details, ideally including your email address, to ia@jtp.co.uk including ‘South Worcester’ in the subject heading.

Background

The 2008 draft South Worcestershire Joint Core Strategy (SWJCS) identified the land south of St Peter's in South Worcester as a site for a sustainable urban extension delivering around 3000 dwellings.  Approximately 25 hectares (62 acres) of employment land would also be required along with a two-form entry primary school, community and health care facilities, shops, leisure facilities and emergency services.  The draft plan is now emerging as the South Worcestershire Development Plan and will provide a planning framework that aims to ensure development has a positive impact on the environment.  It is being jointly prepared by the three authorities of Malvern Hills, Wychavon and Worcester City who will publish their revised requirements for dwelling numbers and employment land in early July.  The South Worcestershire Development Plan will form the heart of the new Local Development Framework.

A consortium, led by Welbeck Strategic Land LLP, is promoting the site at South Worcester and would like to involve the local community in developing a masterplan.  The masterplanning team, led by John Thompson & Partners (JTP), has been employed to draw up proposals for the site.  This will eventually form part of an outline planning application. The aim is to create a great place to live that reflects the needs and aspirations of local people as well as delivering the wider planning objectives of three local authorities which include creating new jobs, delivering new homes and improving the A4440.  The consortium is supporting the work being undertaken by the three planning authorities, to provide site specific evidence which will support the strategic allocation.
